5 Ways to Wear Colorful Stripes Without Looking Like a Circus Clown

Wide, bright stripes are popular for spring and summer, and the color combinations are dazzling. It’s all part of the trend towards Dopamine Dressing – colors that make you feel happy. The only thing is, how do you wear such bright cheery stripes without looking like a circus clown?  I have 5 tips to look classy in colorful striped clothing.

1.  Wear Colorful Stripes with a Neutral Color

When wearing a bright striped top, keep the bottom half of your outfit neutral to balance things out. A great color to wear is white. White shorts, white pants, or a white skirt are like an artist’s canvas. They make an excellent backdrop, allowing a colorful striped top to be the single focus!  Black or Beige also works well. You can keep your purse neutral or pick a color from the stripes and accent for a more vibrant look, depending on your personality.

2. Choose Clean, Classic Silhouettes

Classic silhouettes with no little detail counterbalance the super high energy of a big, fat, bold stripe. For example, this simple summer shift dress is a nice, clean backdrop to these big, sporty green and white stripes.

4. Try Color blocking

Colorblocking is chunks of color rather than rows of stripes and can seem a little less busy. It’s also a modern way to wear colorful stripes.

5. Embrace a Nautical Theme

This spring, you’ll see nautical clothing with new shapes and details. Although the dress is bright blue, the actual stripes are white, which helps tone things down. I love this ship shape look.

6. Wear Soft Muted Stripes

Colorful stripes can be bright or soft. In this case, the stripes are more muted due to the interesting weave of the knit that has some cream wool showing through. This also gives this sweater a more laid-back vibe.

7.  A Striped Accessory May Be What You Need

Accessories are a great way to incorporate colorful stripes without going all out. I love color, so this love orange linen dress paired with a yellow and tan striped bag is perfect for me. For more conservative gals, try a tan or black dress with this yellow and tan striped beach tote to wear as an accent. It’s like an exclamation mark!

What do you think of bright stripes? Classy or clownish? I’d love to know!
