What To Wear To A Family Reunion In The Summer: Refined and Relaxed

Summer means BBQs, picnics, and—you guessed it—family reunions. They’re one of the best excuses to gather everyone together, catch up, snap a few photos, and share some fun family history tidbits.

Most of the time, the setting is low-key, such as someone’s backyard, a local park, or even a rented picnic area—but the vibe is always the same: casual, cheerful, and full of love.

When it comes to what to wear, there’s no strict dress code, but you want to strike a sweet spot between comfortable and camera-ready. Think easy, breezy outfits with a polished twist. Some families even suggest a color theme—blue and white, tan and cream, or tropical brights with floral prints are all crowd-pleasers.

Let’s talk outfit ideas that’ll help you stay cool, feel confident, and look fabulous in every group photo.

Family Reunion: How to Decide What to Wear

Consider the Setting

Is the reunion at someone’s pool, or at a nice restaurant? Knowing the location helps you dress the part. A casual BBQ calls for relaxed styles and comfy shoes. But if you’re heading to a country club or dinner out, go for something a bit more polished—maybe a sundress with low heels or a cute blouse and trousers. Also, consider factors such as grass, gravel, heat, and the amount of time you’ll be on your feet. You want to be stylish and smart about it.

Keep It Cool and Comfortable

When it’s hot out (and you know it will be!), breathable fabrics are your best friend. Skip anything heavy or clingy—especially silk or rayon, which don’t play well with sweat. Go for cotton, linen, or gauze—easy, breezy, and elegant. And while a flowy layer can look chic, save it for an evening event with shade and fans. During the day, you’ll be much happier in something simple and light.

Dress for You

You know your style better than anyone, so wear what makes you feel confident. Skip chasing every trend and stick with flattering pieces that highlight your best features. Whether it’s a breezy midi dress or your favorite white jeans and a colorful top, if it feels like you, it’ll look great.

Be Camera-Ready

Let’s face it—there will be photos—lots of them. So wear something that looks good on camera. That means no fussy prints or awkward cuts. Choose soft florals, solid colors, or simple patterns that flatter you, and pay attention to your neckline and any slits. You want to feel comfortable from every angle.

Ask About a Theme

Many family reunions have a color scheme or theme—think blue and white, tan and cream, or tropical brights. Find out in advance so you’re not the only one in red when everyone else is in beige. Coordinated doesn’t mean boring, though—add your twist so you still stand out (in the best way!).

Let’s take a look at a few of my favorite family reunion outfits. From breezy sundresses to chic two-piece sets, you’re sure to find a look that complements you perfectly.

green floral maxi family reunion

watecolor maxi

Tiered Cotton Maxi Dress and Sandals

This watercolor maxi dress is perfect for summer reunions of any kind. It features a stunning tropical floral print that doesn’t feel too bold for a relaxed backyard barbecue, and a swingy, graceful silhouette that exudes femininity and chicness. The fabric is a lightweight pima cotton, so you won’t have to worry about overheating or slim-fitting materials.

Add on a nice pair of raffia sandals and a small woven bag for the ultimate relaxed, sophisticated vibe.

Short Sleeve Shift Dress

Shift dresses are known for their easy, no-frump style. This relaxed pink one feels very casual, almost like a t-shirt dress, but with a little more wow! Factor. And for summertime, it’s a staple piece—no fuss, clean lines, and always appropriate no matter what your day holds.

A colorful cotton shift dress exudes a fun and friendly vibe. Add raffia sandals or sneakers.

White Linen Blouse and Wide-Leg Trousers

A linen top and a pair of linen joggers are perfect for the gals who want to stay cool, look sharp, and skip the flowy dresses. A striped shirt like this one is a timeless closet staple, always keeping any look fresh and modern.

These white linen pants have clean lines and an easygoing fit. The elastic waistband makes them stretchy and comfortable for all-day wear.

Shorts and a cute tee or top

If you are still rocking shorts after 40, 50 or 60, these are a cute pair. I love the color, cut, and sporty patch pockets. They look great with tshirt or a pretty blouse of our choice.

How To Accessorize Summer Outfits For Family Reunion

Choose Jewelry Accordingly

Though it may be fun to wear, you don’t always need chunky statement accessories to add flair to your look. You don’t want things to feel costumey! For summertime accessorizing, less is often more. It’s always best to choose light, dainty pieces that don’t feel heavy and won’t get in the way. Or, most importantly, steal the show!

Pay attention to the patterns and colors you’re wearing. If you’re wearing lots of solid prints and neutral colors, you have some leeway in your choices. However, if your outfit already has a lot of print and color you don’t need much all.  Check out these gorgeous pieces of jewelry in this post  for some inspiration!

woven bag

Seasonal Bags

Lugging around a giant tote will ultimately just get in your way. Keep those oversized woven bags for the beach or pool! Instead, choose something practical—something that complements your outfit. Most importantly, skip any neon hues and loud logos. These are too flashy and may clash with your timeless, refined look.

Did you know that your body type may also influence which bag looks best on you? Check out: “How To Choose the Right Handbag for Your Body Type” for more on this!

round sunglasses

Use Sunglasses For Style

Sunglasses aren’t just functional; they can elevate your overall look. And when it comes to a family reunion in the summer, they’re must-haves if you’re going to be outside and in lots of pictures.

Avoid anything too sporty or athletic (unless your reunion includes hiking, LOL!). Instead, opt for tortoise-shell, oversized square, sleek cat-eye frames or modern translucent round glasses. Just like the rest of your accessories, your sunglasses should complement your outfit, not compete with it.

Stick to Comfortable Shoes

Between walking around and chatting, posing for pictures, and chasing around grandkids, you’ll likely be on your feet a lot! Save yourself (and your feet) the trouble, and find a good pair of comfortable shoes. This means leave the stilettos and super chunky wedges at home—you don’t want to risk falling and hurting yourself.

But that doesn’t mean you should throw on a pair of athletic sneakers, either! Look for nude-toned sandals, polished flats, pointed-toe slides, or low-block heels. Not only will they enhance your outfit, but you won’t have to sacrifice comfort. Check out my “Shoes For Women Over 40” archives for all different sorts of options!

Add Light Layers

Even in the summer, a light layer can tie your whole look together. Plus, it’s a smart move for unpredictable summer storms and chilly air-conditioned venues. A lightweight, cropped cardigan or a sheer shawl can be a fabulous choice. And, as a bonus, these light layers do wonders for gracefully covering arms without making it look like you’re hiding underneath fabrics.

Family reunions are a special time full of reconnecting, bonding, and reminiscing. And even though that’s most important, your outfit still plays a critical role in how comfortable you are throughout the day. When you’re not comfortable (or confident), it shows. Enjoy the day with your family and let your timeless style take center stage.
