My Tips for Dressing in Hot Weather

TIPS FOR DRESSING IN HOT WEATHER FOR WOMEN OVER 40Choose the Right Fabrics

When it comes to summer dressing, fabric is everything. No matter how cute a top is, if it’s made from a synthetic material like polyester, it will trap heat and leave you feeling sticky. Instead, reach for breathable, natural fabrics that allow air to circulate.

Here’s what I look for when the forecast is full of sunshine:

  • Linen: My go-to for those steamy days. Yes, it wrinkles, but that’s part of its charm. Think of it as “effortless elegance.”
  • Cotton: Light, soft, and classic. I especially love cotton gauze and poplin for summer.
  • Rayon or Tencel: These fabrics drape beautifully and feel silky against the skin.
  • Chambray: A great alternative if you want the look of denim without the weight.

Hot tip: If the fabric feels heavy or stiff in your hands, it’ll feel even worse on your body in 90-degree weather. Always go for lightweight and breathable.

Quince has become one of my favorite places to shop for lightweight, natural fabrics—especially linen. Linencan see my full try-on and review of their Linen Linen here.

CUTE OUTFITS THAT WILL KEEP YOU FROM SWEATING IN THE HOT WEATHER SUMMERTIME FOR WOMEN OVER 40Embrace Looser Fits

Tight clothing might seem flattering in theory, but in the heat, it’s a one-way ticket to cling city. When it’s humid, everything sticks—so the key is to create a little space between your body and your clothes.

Try swapping skinny jeans for flowy wide-leg pants or a tiered sundress that catches the breeze. A loose-fit linen shirt over a tank can be your best friend. It gives you coverage but lets air circulate, so you don’t feel like you’re roasting.

Think easy, breezy, and slightly oversized. Not shapeless, but skimming rather than squeezing.

HOW TO LAYER AND WHAT COLORS TO WEAR TO STAY COOL IN THE SUMMER WHEN IT'S HOT OUTSIDE

Lighter Colors, Lighter Layers

Black is slimming, but it also absorbs heat. When it’s hot out, I go for lighter shades like white, soft blush, chambray blue, or even a fun summer print. Lighter colors reflect the sun and instantly make you feel cooler. For example, this dress by Tommy Bahama. This brand specializes in colorful tropical clothes. I’m a big fan. Check out my review of Tommy Bahama here.

As for layers, yes, you can layer in summer. The trick is keeping them light. A linen button-down, a gauzy kimono, or an open-weave cardigan can add dimension to your outfit without adding bulk. And they’re perfect for chilly A/C indoors.

WHAT SHOES TO WEAR WHEN IT'S HOT AND SWEATY FOR WOMEN OVER 40Choose Summer-Friendly Shoes

If your feet swell in the heat (mine do!), the last thing you want is a tight shoe rubbing you the wrong way.

Here’s what works:

  • Flat leather sandals with soft straps
  • Low espadrille wedges (they’re pretty and still walkable)
  • Slides that you can slip in and out of easily
  • Lightweight sneakers for walking or travel days

Avoid anything with plastic or rubber that doesn’t breathe. And if your favorite sandals are starting to rub, a little moleskin or gel pad can work wonders.

Pay Attention to What’s Underneath

Let’s have a quick chat about undergarments. When it’s hot, they matter.

Start with breathable cotton underwear and moisture-wicking bras. You want lightweight support without adding extra heat. If you can go wire-free, even better. A soft bralette or bandeau might be all you need under a loose summer top.

Skip the shapewear unless absolutely necessary. If you want a smoothing layer under a dress, try a slip made from breathable stretch fabric instead.

Stay Fresh All Day

Even the most breathable outfit won’t help much if you feel like you’re melting by noon. A few little beauty tricks go a long way:
