J.Crew Dressing Room Try On: Fall Sweaters & Pants

For me, Fall style comes down to one simple formula: cozy sweater + chic pants = instant outfit. It’s a uniform I never get tired of, and this J.Crew Fall try-on is all about finding the best sweaters and pants for the season. From the latest jeans to soft knits you’ll want to live in, I tried on some of the new arrivals to see which ones are worth adding to your Fall wardrobe. Let’s take a look.

Brushed Cashmere Cardigan

You know how there’s nothing like cashmere in the Fall? Well, this brushed cashmere cardigan kicks it up a notch. It’s soft, fluffy, and feels so incredibly luxurious the moment you put it on. The cropped cut is perfect with high-waisted jeans, and it feels lighter and more feminine when you’re not in the mood for a slouchy boyfriend cardigan. (I think this sweater would also look great with wide-leg jeans!)

And the Winterberry red? Gorgeous. (I flagged this new color in my Fall Colors Report.) It’s so juicy, I skipped right past light-wash denim and paired it with a dark resin rinse boot cut. The way that deep wash sets off the red is just so elegant.

J. Crew Perfect Cashmere Sweater

Here’s another cashmere top that J.Crew calls their Perfect Cashmere Sweater (probably in part because it really does fit true to size). I’ve got it on with the Delaney Kick Out Sweater Pants in hot chocolate. They’re knit, a little cropped with that fun kick-flare at the bottom, and honestly, they’re so comfy—like lounge pants, but with a little more polish. The fabric has a nice medium weight, so it actually holds you in a bit, kind of like Spanx pants.

And the color – It’s such an interesting green. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but once I put it on, it felt so earthy, fresh, and modern that I ended up loving it. It’s best for gals with warm tones.

Sweater, Tee, and Blazer

This is the Carolyn Sweater Tee in merino wool, paired with the École blazer in Italian wool, and I’ve got it on with those high-waisted, flared jeans again. It’s definitely a little matchy-matchy with all the navy, but you know what? I kind of like it. It almost has that casual suit vibe going on. And if you swapped the jeans for brown corduroys to complement the brown in the sweater, it would give you a whole different vibe—less preppy, more of that town-and-country chic look I discussed in my Fall style vibes post.

Oversized Vintage Wool Sweater and Cords

No surprise this Oversized Sweater Tee is a bestseller—it’s my favorite. It’s roomy but not sloppy, which makes it so easy to style. You can achieve the oversized-over-skinny look with slim pants, or half-tuck them into flares like these vintage corduroys (I wish brands would steam their clothes!) I especially love this color combination—the rich burgundy paired with the brown cords feels very fall-like, like the colors of autumn leaves.

And the Delphini shoulder bag in oxblood? The trendy “east-west shape” is adorable, and the studs add just the right amount of texture—almost like jewelry for this outfit.

Polka Dot Cardigan

Okay, another cardigan! Cardigans are everywhere this Fall (I even did a whole post on how to wear them), so I had to try this polka-dot merino wool version. Polka dots can feel a little vintage (not my vibe), but with high-waisted dark wash jeans and in this Crimson color rather than red, I thought it was fun.

This is a size small, and you can see it’s snug across the bust. The fit is cut closer to the body, so if you want more room, I recommend sizing up. The merino wool is soft and lightweight, making it easy to wear with a thin tee or knit tank, and the print gives it just enough personality.

Watercolor Floral Cashmere

Finally, Here’s J. Crew’s Watercolor Brushed Cashmere Sweater. I thought I’d try it because almost all of my cashmere sweaters are solid colors, except for a floral cashmere sweater from Talbots that I wore last winter with a velvet blazer.

The soft, washed pinks and reds, with a touch of brown, are beautiful and right on trend. But honestly? I don’t love this sweater with these knit pants. Tight sweater, tight pants—it just feels too much, and trying to match the brown in the pants to the brown in the sweater makes it look dated. I think it would be way cuter with medium-wash straight legs or some wide-leg jeans. Live and learn—that’s why we do try-ons.

J. Crew has so many new sweaters and pants, I barely scratched the surface. Many of these are on sale now, so be sure to check out the savings if there’s something here that feels like you!

  1. I love your column. When reviewing sweaters next time, could you add some that are not wool or cashmere?! I’m allergic, and for people in warmer climates, wool rarely is appropriate. Thank you.

  2. I recently ordered from J Crew Factory for the first time. Love stripes! I love what I ordered. I will check them out on my next shopping trip to the mall!

    1. Hi Jan, J Crew Factory is super popular on this blog. Classics with a twist, color and great prices! Sounds good to me!

  3. I always forget about J Crew, but they have some great classics. The button downs and denim especially, always are good quality.

    1. Hi Jillian, I always forget about them too, which is why I wrote this post. They really feel modern-lots of color, good costume jewelry and fabulous shoes too. I’m going to start linking to them more!
