yellow cashmere sweater | wide leg jeans
Oversized Cashmere Sweater & Wide Leg Jeans
Isn’t it interesting how colors have become seasonless? I wouldn’t normally expect to find bright yellow in the Fall, but here it is, and I’m actually really loving it! This pretty cashmere sweater is actually the perfect transitional piece – buttery yellow like summer, but cozy and warm like Fall. The fit is slightly oversized, and it features a relaxed drop shoulder that gives you that cool girl vibe.
This crewneck is long enough that you’ll want to tuck it in loosely, and there are many ways you can play with that.
I’ve paired it with these great-fitting, wide-leg jeans. They have a comfy high waist, and I think the medium-light wash is perfect with this soft shade of yellow, since they are both the same intensity.
Button Shoulder Sweater | Straight Leg Jeans
Striped Button Shoulder Sweater
Stripes are always a yes for me, especially when they are presented in a new and engaging way. I was immediately attracted to this cute cotton striped sweater because of its flattering boat neckline and sailor-like buttons down the arm. There’s definitely a bit of a nautical vibe going on, but the chunkiness of the sweater and the ribbing make it feel Fall-like.
I thought dark-wash jeans would make this sweater pop, so I chose this straight-leg style, which seems to be selling well. They’re a classic pair of jeans that you can’t go wrong with, and the fit felt very true to size. I’m wearing size 28.
Short Suede Jacket | White sleeveless sweater | wide leg jeans
Suede Jacket & Wide Leg Jeans
Suede is a big trend this Fall due to fashion’s Western Influence, and Banana Republic has several lovely pieces. This one caught my eye. On the hanger, it looked like a cross between a cowboy jacket and a ’50s swing jacket. When I layered it over a white sleeveless knit top, it felt more like a cropped suede shirt. I opted for the wide-leg jeans, and I think it’s a cute look and a nice change from, say, a jean jacket.
Marled Sweater | High Rise Straight Leg jeans
Marled Sweater & Straight Leg Jeans
Another sweater with interesting arm details, but this time, instead of buttons, the shirt features epaulets and pockets. It has a military or cargo look to it, and the mottled brown color is gorgeous. This sweater feels luxurious. It’s a medium-weight fabric that is part cashmere and part Merino wool.
You can pair it with blue jeans, but I thought I’d try black to dress things up. These are the same high-waisted jeans as the dark wash ones I showed you earlier. They’re a nod to the ’90s with a stovepipe-straight fit through the leg.

Red Cashmere Turtleneck | Straight leg Jeans
Cashmere Turtleneck & Straight-Leg Jeans
Banana Republic has been very neutral, very beige since its rebrand a couple of years ago, and frankly, that’s been rather dull. I was delighted to see this fiery red sweater breathe new life into the brand. It’s a fine cashmere funnel neck sweater that’s light, soft, and loose. It’s hard to see the color under these dressing room lights, but I’d call it a cross between red and orange. This was probably my favorite.
Balloon Sleeve Shirt
O.K., I wasn’t expecting this one. This unusual shirt looked different, and a touch weird online, but even more so when I tried it on in person. Never mind that I probably needed one size up and the jeans didn’t look right. It still made me feel like I was a circus clown! Is it fashion- forward, freaky, or both? What do you think? My face says it all- Pass.

Green Cashmere Polo sweater | Brown Wide Leg Pants
Short Sleeve Cashmere Polo & Wide Leg Pants
Another cashmere sweater – Banana Republic has fabulous cashmere. This time, it’s a short-sleeve Polo sweater. I love this kind of sweater because it’s cute and the short sleeves keep you from overheating. You can wear it with jeans or try their bestselling wide-leg pants. Here they are in brown. They pants are very light and comfy, but I wish they were a high rise, instead of a mid-rise.

Cropped Polo Sweater | Straight Leg Jeans
Cropped Polo Sweater & Straight Leg Jeans
Another striped sweater. Were they going for a sailor vibe or a rugby player look? I love the wide, flat collar that frames the face, and these thick, earthy brown and black stripes feel town and country. You could easily wear this cute, cropped sweater with black jeans (straight or wide leg), but it might feel a bit matchy-matchy.

Button Shoulder Sweater | Straight Leg Jeans
Boat Neck Sweater
If this sweater looks familiar, it is! It’s the same as the second sweater I shared, which features horizontal stripes and big, gold buttons. This time out, it’s in purple with a space dye look.

Chore coat | Green Tee | Straight Leg Jeans
Barn Chore Jacket
Did you read my post on Barn Jackets? I talked about this one, made from wax cotton with a classy corduroy collar and roll-up sleeves. This is a trend you either love or hate, since it’s here to stay. At first, I thought it might be too bulky to look at, but once I tried it on, I had a good fit. I love this khaki color and all those pockets.

Hi Deborah, I love that yellow cashmere sweater on you. I know I’ve said it before, but yellow really is a fantastic color on you. :) For me, I’d go with the obsidian pool blue. Except it has drop shoulders, which do not look flattering on me at all. Phooey!
I love the pairing of the yellow sweater with the lighter jeans. I think that matching the intensity makes them work well together. I’m wondering what I can pair this fall with the light wash Ann Taylor wide leg trouser jeans you recommended in the spring. Alas, yellow is not my color but I’m wondering if any other light colors (in addition to white and cream) might be appropriate for fall.
Hi,SF! Have you thought about Lavender. It’s one of my favorite colors with light wash jeans and it’s become a popular fall color. See this post:https://www.fabulousafter40.com/how-to-wear-a-lilac-or-lavender-sweater-this-fall/ These jeans are mid wash but I can see the light jeans and a lavender or a light pink too. Remember, these days it’s not just the color but the fabric, texture that makes it fall so a lavender or ballet pink sweater with light wash jeans would be really pretty in fall. Hope that helps. Cheers, Deb
Our Banana Republic closed and I hate it because their 00P dresses fit so well. Thank goodness I have a sweater dress I got last year at the end of season that I never wore. I use to love their jeans but over time I tried other petite places. All the pieces you shared with a few exceptions (the crazy shirt) look fabulous on you. Thanks for sharing!
Ugh! Desperately need advise on what to wear to my bro-in-law burial and celebration of life afterward. (There will be a 21 gun salute at cemetery).
Hi Sue, I’d say a navy or black dress with clean lines ( ie: no ruffles, frills, etc) or a dark blazer and pants with a silky blouse. Your outfit should be respectful and conservative. Err on the traditional side. Here’s an article that will help!https://www.fabulousafter40.com/what-to-wear-to-a-funeral/
For that pink maxi dress, it does kind of look like a bridesmaid dress. I would whack it off at knee length.
Beautiful clothes on you, and I love the colors!! I have a summer shirt from BR in bold pink, kind of like your linen polo, but mine was sleeveless! It’s surprising how simple looks elegant sometimes, but it was my favorite summer top. I am glad to see they are keeping that style and adding sleeves. In Mississippi, we are wilting in the heat!!! Have fun on your trip!!!
